The project "prosecuterix" stems from my experiences of growing up in India and
having to navigate and protect myself from the male gaze. Specifically an
unpleasant life altering experience where I was violated as a child traveling in a
local bus pushes me to make this work.
Through this work I want to bring realization to situations where men, women,
children and people from the LGBTQ+ community have experienced sexual abuse
I am asking you, the viewer, to share your story of sexual assault anonymously.
To participate, you may put your story in the drop box, in an empty labeled
shoebox, or email it to prosecuterix@gmail.com.You can also substitute a blank page
in place of a written story if that is what you are comfortable with. If you are
unable to share your story your presence in itself is powerful.
Your identity will be hidden. The boxes will be QR coded and when scanned will link
to your story. If you want to add your voice but don't want it published just mark
the email / papers with the subject header DON'T READ. The story will be assigned
to a box that will be glued shut and the QR code will link to a blank page.
The shoe image found on the label of the shoebox is replaced by a sketch of a
person found randomly online. The attached title is prosecuterix pw + number of
shoebox. The research based quotes are from survivors of sexual assault, victim
blamers, and rape apologists. The bar code / QR code on the shoebox leads to
stories which were shared through the project.
I want to emphasize that the sketch, the quotes, the story do not connect to each
other. They are ALL random and misconstrued pieces of a puzzle just as abuse is.
I am also playing with the idea of how gender/ race/ appearance of the sketched
person and the story inside the box plays with our inherent prejudices.
For the duration of the install and beyond, I encourage you to share your story in
this safe artistic space.
